After the Nominations: My First-Look 2014 Oscar Predictions

Well, the day has arrived, and the Academy has officially announced its nominations for each and every category at the 2014 Academy Awards. There are some notable snubs (or at least perceived snubs), some nice surprises, and a fair share of nominees whose fates were more-or-less set in stone, but let’s move beyond that discussion and into the one everyone (or perhaps no one) cares about: predicting the actual winners of the golden statuettes come Sunday, March 2.

As it currently stands in my very briefly thought out and probably hasty first batch of predictions, it looks as though Gravity, tied with American Hustle as the most nominated film with 10 tips of the hat, may well be the top trophy-getter on film’s big night. I’ve predicted it to notch 7 wins, including a Best Director triumph for Alfonso Cuaron, with 12 Years A Slave picking up 4 awards including Best Picture and Dallas Buyers Club the surprise third place finisher with 3 wins, led by wins in both male acting categories. Here is the breakdown in terms of predicted wins by each film, again excluding the shorts as I did in my nominations predictions:

Gravity: 7 wins
12 Years A Slave: 4 wins
Dallas Buyers Club: 3 wins
Frozen: 2 wins
The Act of Killing: 1 win
Blue Jasmine: 1 win
The Great Beauty: 1 win
The Great Gatsby: 1 win
Her: 1 win
